TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION OF ASPHALT RECYCLING EQUIPMENT:
The recycling equipment, often referred to as a "train" consists of the following equipment:
PREHEATER. Excess surface moisture interferes with the efficient heating of recycled asphalt pavement. Therefore, the asphalt surface is preheated to remove excessive moisture prior to the main heating and milling process.
This is accomplished by a preheater unit, trailered behind a 1500-gallon capacity propane supply 5-ton truck. The truck is equipped with two 80/40 propane vaporizers. The preheater utilizes high airflow burners fired horizontally, one foot above the pavement, into an insulated steel enclosure designed to dissipate the moisture while heating the entire lane width. Four hydraulic cylinders are utilized to raise and lower the burner system as required. Rubber tired wheels are used for trailering and are replaced by steel wheels for operation. Emissions are naturally aspirated through exhaust stacks into an emissions combustion chamber where unburned hydrocarbons are incinerated prior to discharge.
Measurements: Truck 30 x 8 x 10;
Preheater 26 x 126" x 13
Weights: Truck: Front axle: 12,000 lbs; Rear axle: 21,000 lbs
Operating weight: 28,000 lbs
Preheater: Rear axle: 10,000 lbs.; Operating weight: 17,000 lbs.
"A" UNIT: The "A" Unit is a self-propelled machine which employs banks of propane-fired, nickel cadmium, infrared heaters to heat a full lane-width of asphalt to a depth of 1 to 1-1/4 inches. The units two parallel 5 rotating milling heads remove the upper 1-inch of softened asphalt from each side of the lane and windrows the material to the center of the lane.
A computer controlled 1,300 gallon rejuvenate dispensing system, linked to the forward speed of the unit, is located on the "A" Unit and provides the ability to add rejuvenate to comply with specified application rates required by the contract.
Measurements: Operating: 57 x 126" x 126"
Weights: Front axle: 27,000 lbs.; Rear axle: 38,000 lbs.
Operating weight: 62,000 lbs
Power Unit: Caterpillar 3306B
"B" UNIT: The "B" Unit immediately follows the "A" Unit and is pushed by the track paver. This unit employs a 4 milling head and drag-slat conveyor to pick up the windrow from the "A" Unit and transports the material over the heater banks of the "B" Unit, dropping it in front of the Pugmill, mounted at the end of the "B" Unit.
The infrared heaters of the "B" Unit then heat the newly exposed asphalt to a depth of 1 to 1-1/4 inch and a 12 milling head removes the lower layer of asphalt, windrowing it with the material from the "A" Unit. The full-width milling head operates with automatic grade controls, adjustable on both sides which provides for reshaping or reprofiling of the pavement surface.
The "B" Unit is equipped with a front-mounted Hopper which meters new mix or coated aggregate into the drag-slat conveyor relative to the speed of the unit, according to design requirements.
An independently powered twin-shaft Pugmill attached to the "B" Unit then picks up the windrow, which includes material from the "A" and "B" Units, and any new material, and thoroughly mixes it prior to elevating it into the paver hopper and immediate re-application to the highway surface.
